The High Costs of Sprawl
In Summer 2013, Environmental Defence released a report demonstrating that sprawling development in Ontario is a fundamental threat to our economy, health, and environment. The report stated that sprawl results in wasteful use of land, usually at the expense of our important farming communities and local food production.
This publication unveils the root causes of sprawl and the hidden costs paid by our municipalities, businesses and residents when new developments are built. It identifies where policy needs to change and best practices created to stop government subsidies and instead incentivize investment in the right kinds of development in the right places for sustainable, complete communities.
A fantastic and timely report, this research needed to be done and is a great contribution to the dialogue around farmland preservation and planning for population growth in Ontario.
