In April 2026, 125 acres of agricultural and natural areas were permanently protected through a conservation easement on the Mighton Farm, thanks to the commitment of landowners Pat and Dennis Mighton.

The property remains actively cultivated through a rotation of corn, oats, wheat, barley, and
occasionally beans. The land features a diverse range of agricultural soils, including Classes 1 through 4 and Organic Soils.

Beyond its agricultural value, the Mighton Farm is rich in ecological features. The landscape includes mature forest, meadow, swamp, and streams, forming a dynamic and interconnected natural system. A provincially significant swamp wetland covering approximately 27 acres provides critical ecological functions, including water filtration and flood mitigation. This wetland, recognized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, is part of a broader network of waterways within the Grand River Watershed.

The property’s natural areas support a wide range of wildlife. An ephemerally wet swamp creates ideal breeding habitat for amphibians, while the meadow, home to Common Milkweed and Goldenrod, offers essential resources for pollinators, including the Monarch butterfly. Several species at risk animals have been observed on the property, including Monarch, Barn
Swallow, and Eastern Wood-pewee. The property is also home to two endangered tree species: Black Ash and Butternut.

With increasing development pressure in the surrounding area, the Mightons made the decision to protect their land to ensure it remains a thriving agricultural and ecological landscape for generations to come. Their stewardship reflects a deep commitment to safeguarding farmland, supporting local food systems, and preserving the natural heritage of the region.
