Written by Martin Straathof, OFT Executive Director
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Larry Rosevear, a cherished member of the Ontario Farmland Trust community. Larry’s contributions to farmland protection in Ontario were generous, passionate, and deeply rooted in his love for the land and the people who steward it.
Larry served on the Ontario Farmland Trust Board of Directors from 2013 to 2020, and continued his service on the Land Stewardship Committee until this year. During his tenure, Larry played an instrumental role in shaping OFT’s approach to conservation easements and building relationships with landowners. His knowledge, warmth, and grounded perspective made him a natural leader and a trusted voice at the table.
Outside of OFT, Larry had a successful career in agriculture, spending 16 years with Farm Credit Canada Corporation, followed by 35 years as a real estate appraiser working out of London, Ontario. He always had a clear vision: that Ontario’s farmland was not only worth protecting, but essential to the province’s future.
When Larry stepped down from the board in 2020, we shared our deep gratitude for his leadership and unwavering support. In that tribute, we wrote: “Larry has always kept us focused on the land – on the soil, on the farmers, on the long-term protection of Ontario’s agricultural systems.” That sentiment rings even more true today.
On a personal note, I will miss Larry dearly. When I joined OFT in 2022, Larry was among the first to welcome me with open arms. He joined me for site visits, accompanied me in meetings with new landowners, and shared many meaningful conversations while we worked together at events like Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show. Larry was always just a phone call away, ready with advice, encouragement, or a story that reminded us why this work matters. He was a steadfast ambassador for OFT, being generous with his time, wisdom, and heart.
We know that many others share this sentiment: Larry was not only a conservationist, he was a kind and generous friend. His legacy will live on through the farmland he helped protect, the people he mentored, and the community he helped build. He will be sorely missed.
Our thoughts are with Larry’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. We are grateful for all he gave to OFT and to farmland protection in Ontario.
