Ontario Farmland Trust Celebrates Landmark Decision to Protect Pickering Lands

Martin Straathof, Executive Director of the Ontario Farmland Trust reflects on the federal government’s decision to protect the Pickering Lands.

The Ontario Farmland Trust (OFT) is celebrating the historic announcement made by the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, the Honourable Anita Anand, that the federal government will not proceed with an airport on the Pickering Lands and will instead transfer a significant portion of these lands to Parks Canada for inclusion in Rouge National Urban Park.

This is a momentous victory for the farmers, conservationists, and community members who have fought tirelessly for over five decades to protect these lands. It is a testament to the power of grassroots advocacy, the importance of persistence, and the unwavering belief that farmland and natural spaces deserve to be safeguarded for future generations.

“For years, farmers on these lands have persevered under uncertain conditions, continuing to feed our communities despite the ongoing threat of displacement,” said Martin Straathof, Executive Director of the Ontario Farmland Trust. “This announcement is the culmination of decades of dedication, advocacy, and the collective efforts of individuals who refused to let this land be lost to development. We at OFT are humbled to have stood alongside so many who have worked to make this outcome a reality.”

Farmland is an irreplaceable resource, and Ontario continues to lose an average of 319 acres per day. The protection of these lands represents a major step forward in recognizing the essential role that agriculture plays in our environment, economy, and food security. OFT commends the federal government for listening to the voices of farmers, conservationists, and local advocates and taking meaningful action to preserve this landscape.

This victory belongs to the communities that have never stopped fighting for these lands. It is a reminder that when people come together with a shared vision for conservation and sustainability, real change is possible.

As the transition of these lands unfolds, OFT looks forward to working with Parks Canada, the federal government, and our partners to ensure that agricultural lands within the Pickering Lands continue to be actively farmed and permanently protected. This is an incredible moment to celebrate, and we extend our deepest congratulations to everyone who has contributed to this success.
