August Outreach Update

Thank you to the Barrie Farmers’ Market and the Patagonia Store in downtown Toronto for hosting the Ontario Farmland Trust in August. We had a blast talking with market goers and customers! Almost 100 passionate and curious folks stopped to chat about the importance of protecting our precious and limited farmland and to learn about the work of land trusts.

OFT was happy to offer a raffle prize donated by the Patagonia store for those that visited our booth in the store. As a result, 16 visitors graciously donated to OFT for a chance to win Patagonia’s 40L Black Hole Duffel. We were able to raise $150 which will directly support our mission in protecting farmland forever.

The impacts of farmland loss extend far beyond our local food system. It affects our local and rural economies, food price stability, and the biodiversity of our soils and farmland ecosystems, among other things. For example, by paving over these lands, our communities become increasingly vulnerable to the destruction and damage from floods, as we’ve seen recently across the GTA.

If you’d like to learn more about the catastrophic consequences of farmland loss or how we can work together to help save our irreplaceable farmland, OFT staff and volunteers will be at the following events. Feel free to come by and chat!

  • Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show, Woodstock – September 10-12th
  • Morrison Farm, Collingwood – September 14th
  • Moondance Organic Farm, Angus – September 28th
  • International Ploughing Match, with our friends Kawartha Land Trust, Lindsay – October 1-5th
  • … with more to come!
