PROPOSED AMENDMENT 1 TO THE GROWTH PLAN FOR THE GREATER GOLDEN HORSESHOE

OFT recently reviewed and provided several recommendations to strengthen the policies within the proposed Amendment 1 to the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

The Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) is what guides all planning and development in the GGH.

The GGH is one of the fastest growing regions in North America, and it is also home to some of the most fertile farmland in Ontario. It is crucial that this farmland is protected in order to maintain the viability of Ontario’s agricultural sector.

OFT believes that it is very important to provide recommendations on the proposed Amendment 1 to the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe to help strengthen policy for farmland protection. Development on farmland in the GGH results in permanent loss of farmland to uses like urban sprawl and aggregate extraction. As the Growth Plan is what guides this development, it is imperative that the importance of farmland is recognized through strong protections.

Based on this, our feedback suggested:

– That density targets are prioritized over population forecasts when planning in the GGH.

– That municipalities must follow the growth forecasts outlined in the Growth Plan and not plan to exceed them.

– That protections for the habitat of species at risk against aggregate extraction are reinstated.

We believe that the review of the Growth Plan is a great opportunity for the Province to strengthen the policies for farmland protection and protect the viability of Ontario’s agricultural sector.
