OFT Annual Members’ Meeting
On Wednesday, June 20th, the Ontario Farmland Trust held their Annual Members’ Meeting at the University of Guelph Arboretum.
The morning started with a warm welcome from Guelph MPP-elect Mike Schreiner. He spoke passionately about the importance of preserving Ontario’s farmland, promoting a thriving agri-food sector, and the critical role that land trusts perform.
Next, Board Chair, Bernard Pope, and Executive Director, Kathryn Enders, provided a review of the past year and spoke about the work and progress OFT has made throughout 2017. Bernard discussed the success of the Farmland Forum in Prince Edward County and our progress in creating a province-wide network of permanently protected farmland. He also praised the work of OFT staff, committees, and volunteers. Kathryn provided a brief overview of the 2017 Annual Report (available here). She discussed the current easements that OFT is working on with farmland owners in Simcoe County, Oxford County, Wellington County, and Prince Edward County.
Looking to 2019, OFT will continue working with the growing number of landowners interested in easement agreements, responding to and recommending stronger farmland protection policies, and growing our network across Ontario.
After the formal meeting, Land Over Landings’ Mary Delaney gave an informative presentation about the organization’s history and current activities. She also provided some highlights from their recently released report, “A Future for the Lands: Economic Impact of Remaining Pickering Federal Lands if Returned to Permanent Agriculture”.
The morning concluded with an excellent lunch and great conversation.
We would like to welcome newly elected board members and extend our thanks and gratitude for all of the hard work from board members whose terms have finished.
Thank you to everyone who attended and see you next year!
