Building Farmland Viability in Ontario
103 planners, Councillors, farmers, and supporters gathered in Prince Edward County for the 14th Annual Farmland Forum. It was an engaging day as we explored planning tools for protecting farmland and supporting farm viability.
Highlights include hearing about how BC’s Agricultural Land Reserve has protected over 4.6 million hectares of land for agricultural purposes in the province, how Haldimand County is supporting farm viability with a variety of fiscal tools, and how two local farm businesses have weathered the soils and changing face of farm diversification in Prince Edward County.
The day closed with a look at what participants think about the past, present, and future for farmland in Ontario. The word cloud above shows the concerns for farmland today in Ontario. But, together, we can create a more hopeful future for a diverse and protected agricultural base in Ontario.
